Dr. Catherine D. Marcum joined the Department of Government and Justice Studies in 2012 and served as department chair from 2022–25. She was appointed interim associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in June 2025.
Dr. Marcum earned a Ph.D. in Criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her areas of teaching and research focus on correctional issues, cybercrime, and victimization, and she very much enjoys working with students on research. Dr. Marcum has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and 20 books in her fields. She is the editor of the Journal of Criminal Justice Education, a journal of Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and is Immediate Past Chair of the Division of Cybercrime for the American Society of Criminology. Dr. Marcum is an active volunteer for the Girl Scouts of America, Watauga County Schools and other community organizations.
