Madeleine Farrington, a senior criminal justice major, competed a summer internship in the United Kingdom at Ennon & Co. Solicitors, a small law firm in London that handles criminal, immigration, asylum, fraud, and family cases.  During her internship, Madeleine gained experience working with a variety of matters in the office, such as interaction with clients, court attendance, office procedures, communications, case files, criminal interviews, and legal visits.  Madeleine’s research focused on plea bargains, which she learned account for 85% of all convictions in the United States and 90% of all convictions in Britain.  Madeleine said, “This internship gave me insight into the criminal justice system as a whole.  It was an opportunity to turn four years of university education into reality.  As a student at Appalachian State, you think you have learned a lot about criminal justice through textbooks and in the classroom.  But the real-world experience helps you to look at all sides and perspectives in order to more fully understand things.”
