During her internship with the Winston-Salem Police Department, Makaila Roberts participated in activities within various divisions, ranging from forensic services to special operations. In each division, she learned about key aspects of the particular job and its role in the criminal justice system. She was able to observe and contribute to community events and attend training specifically designed to enhance community-policing strategies.
“Professionally, the internship allowed me to network and establish relationships with pivotal community leaders. During the middle of my internship, I began collecting business cards and emailing people I met. Because of this, I have opened doors for myself that I didn’t know existed. I connected with a few elected city officials and even sat and talked with the Mayor of Winston-Salem.”
